replacing wiring
Feb 3rd, 2010 at 3:09am

I know this is way off target for the corvette forum, but I want you guys to give an opinion, please.  Reworking my '64 Impala SS, NOT a complete off frame restoration, but going to be restoring and replacing lots of items.  What about all the electrical wiring harnesses?  Undecided  Been thinking about replacing them all, but most people I've mentioned it to seem to think if "it ain't broke leave it alone".

Nearly everything electrical works and am not really having a problem.  My thinking is the wiring is 46 years old.  I know I have "bubba wired" some items on it in my teenage years. Embarrassed

Should I leave it as is or do you think it would be a good plan to replace all the wiring before I start with the other work?

Thanks for an opinion or suggestion. Smiley

90% of car problems are electrical.  I would do it all, and it will give a good peace of mind.

There are numerous kits that are all labeled and over updated fuseboxes, switches, connectors, ect..

my $0.02 only
Cool

If its original '64 wiring,by all means replace it all, like Adam says. If youre doing alot of resto & upgrading, why take a chance of degraded wiring with rotten sheathing burning your car down? On the other hand,if youre so intimidated by redoing an entire wiring harness like I kinda am..... Undecided  -I havent done alot of replacement wiring on my Vette, just additions to.

Adam is right on as usual. I replaced my wiring on my 68 vet for the same reason. I have done other cars , but this time I used a harness from Ron Francis http://www.ronfrancis.com/ . If you're not sure what kit to get give them a call. It's very easy to install & every wire is labeled which makes tracing wires later a piece of cake. Do it know you won't be sorry. I soldered every connection & used heat shrink which took a long time (around 60 hours), but you don't have to, but my car shakes & I didn't want connections coming loose. I'll probably do the Dodge someday for the same reason.

Im still in the middle of restoring my 65 Mustang Fastback.  I have rewired the entire car.  Like most post here, if you do one "section" of the car, might as well do the rest.  Dash wire is the most costly.  if you can get by that, then the rest of the car is plug and play.  As I have learned on the Vetts I have restored, I only want to fix something one time and not have to worry about it again.  Yes, rewire the entire car.  Painless is a good source.

Thanks guys, I definitely think I am going to do the rewiring.  Now I just have to decide the best place to get it all and then convince myself I can do it.

Dale,  on the bottom of the home page is a place called Lectric Limited, they have all kinds of wiring. All I ever bought off them was the print diagram for a 75 and a 78 and then when I was in Carlisle I picked up a trickle charger from them.  Haven't bought wiring off them but maybe somebody here has.

Thanks for the tip, Ed.  Smiley  I will try to contact them and see what they have.  So far I have found out it is going to be a lot more money than I had planned.  Looks like for all the wiring harness, etc it will be about $1200 to $1300. Shocked

That sounds pretty high, I paid around $450.00 for everything from Ron Francis
